Why silver premiums are higher than gold

Silver coins and bars usually carry a higher percentage premium than gold. Here is why, and what that means for you.

On a percentage basis, silver items usually carry a bigger premium than gold. That is why the calculator’s silver limits are wider.

The cost of making them

A 1 oz silver coin holds far less value than a 1 oz gold coin, but making it costs about the same. The fixed cost is a bigger slice of a cheaper product.

Handling and storage

Silver is bulkier for its value, so shipping, packaging and storage cost more per pound of value.

VAT

In the UK silver normally carries 20% VAT and gold doesn’t. That makes the all-in cost gap bigger. See VAT on bullion.

What to do with that

Compare like with like: a silver coin against other silver coins, a gold coin against other gold coins. Try the calculator with your quote.
