Coins or bars: which has the better premium?

Bars usually cost less over spot, coins are easier to sell in small amounts. A plain comparison.

Neither is better for everyone. They suit different goals.

Bars

  • Usually a lower premium over spot, especially in larger sizes.
  • Good if you want the most metal for your money.
  • Large bars can be harder to sell in small pieces.

Coins

  • Usually a higher premium, particularly for popular government coins.
  • Easy to recognise, easy to sell in small amounts, and widely traded.
  • Some are legal tender, and some UK coins are treated differently for tax, so check HMRC.

How to decide

Check the premium for both in the calculator. See the bar size guide and the coin guides for examples.

Not financial advice. See the terms.
