Design

Britannia is the central figure, and the obverse carries the reigning monarch’s portrait. Recent years have added security features to the design.

These are general details. Mints change designs, security features and specifications, so check the mint’s own site for the exact coin you are buying.

What premium is reasonable?

The premium is how far the price you pay (before VAT) is above the metal value at spot. For this coin the calculator treats up to 8% as a good price and up to 12% as fair.

Good ≤ 8%Fair ≤ 12%High

Premiums move with demand, supply, the dealer’s costs and the size of your order, so these limits are a rough guide, not a rule.

How to check your quote

  1. Press “Get live price”, or type in your dealer’s own spot figure.
  2. Enter the price you were quoted and say whether it includes VAT.
  3. Add delivery to see the all-in cost.

Tax

In the UK, silver bullion normally carries 20% VAT, so the calculator starts with VAT set to Yes at 20%. Capital Gains Tax treatment depends on the coin: sterling legal tender such as the Britannia is usually treated differently from foreign coins. Check HMRC’s current guidance.
