Design
It shows a maple leaf on the reverse and the monarch on the obverse, with security features in recent years.
These are general details. Mints change designs, security features and specifications, so check the mint’s own site for the exact coin you are buying.
What premium is reasonable?
The premium is how far the price you pay (before VAT) is above the metal value at spot. For this coin the calculator treats up to 3% as a good price and up to 5% as fair.
Premiums move with demand, supply, the dealer’s costs and the size of your order, so these limits are a rough guide, not a rule.
How to check your quote
- Press “Get live price”, or type in your dealer’s own spot figure.
- Enter the price you were quoted and say whether it includes VAT.
- Add delivery to see the all-in cost.
Tax
In the UK, investment gold coins are normally exempt from VAT, so the calculator sets VAT to No for gold. Sovereigns and Britannias are sterling legal tender, which is usually treated as exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Foreign coins may not be, so check HMRC’s current guidance or an adviser.
